Many areas of Utah experience significant changes in their climate conditions throughout a given year, and one group this can impact in key ways is swimming pool owners. Fall Season Pool Upkeep
The fall season we’re about to enter around Utah, while often not particularly lengthy in nature, is a great opportunity to handle certain basic transitional needs from the hot, dry summer that will soon give way to cold, icy and snowy conditions. There are a few basic steps that should be taken during the fall season to ensure your pool is in good shape for both end-of-season use and an easy transition into winter:
- Clean and store all pool accessories, such as toys, floats, and loungers. This not only prevents them from being damaged by winter weather but also keeps them out of the way during the colder months.
- Drain and clean your pool’s filtration system. This will prevent any buildup of debris or bacteria that can lead to future problems or costly repairs.
- Check your pool’s chemical levels regularly. As temperatures drop, so does the amount of chlorine needed to keep your pool safe and balanced. Adjust accordingly to maintain proper chemical levels.
Winter Season Pool Upkeep
During the winter, much of the goal of swimming pool upkeep is simply ensuring the pool is protected from the elements and maintained for use once the warmer months return. Beyond just preventing any damage to the pool itself, this upkeep also helps preserve its cleanliness and overall health.
Some examples include:
- Keeping the pool properly covered: By using a pool cover, you can help prevent debris from entering the water and also reduce the amount of evaporation that occurs during colder months. This will help keep your pool cleaner and maintain its chemical balance.
- Removing any excess leaves or debris: Even with a cover, some leaves or debris may still find their way into the pool. It’s important to remove these as soon as possible to avoid any potential damage or contamination.
- Checking for cracks or leaks: As temperatures drop, freezing water can cause cracks in your pool’s structure. Regularly checking for and repairing any cracks or leaks will prevent further issues from arising.
Spring Season Pool Upkeep
As temperatures thaw out and the weather warms up, it’s time to start preparing your pool for the spring season. Here are a few tasks to add to your spring cleaning routine:
- Remove any winter covers and clean them thoroughly before storing them away.
- Inspect and clean your pool’s filtration system, including skimmer baskets and filters.
- Test the water chemistry and adjust accordingly. The pH levels should be between 7.4-7.6, total alkalinity between 80-120 ppm, and calcium hardness between 200-400 ppm.
- Shock the pool with chlorine to kill any remaining bacteria or algae that may have built up over the winter months.
- Brush and vacuum the walls and floor of the pool to remove any debris or algae buildup.
- Maintain proper water levels by filling up the pool as needed.
- Run the pool pump and filtration system for at least 8 hours a day to ensure proper circulation and filtration of the water.
- Keep an eye out for any leaks, cracks, or other damage in and around the pool. Address them immediately before they become bigger problems.
As you can see, spring is one of the most involved seasons for pool upkeep. This is because you’re often helping the pool recover from the long winter period of dormancy, plus preparing it for the hot summer months ahead. However, with proper maintenance and care, your pool will be ready for all the fun and relaxation it brings during those warmer days.
Summer Season Pool Upkeep
Finally, the summer is the season where most pools around Utah tend to get their highest levels of use. This means constant activity and potentially more maintenance, but don’t worry – it’s all worth it in the end when you’re floating in the cool water on a hot summer day. Here are some tips for maintaining your pool during the summer season:
- Monitor Chemical Levels: With increased usage, it’s important to regularly check and maintain proper chemical levels in your pool. This includes chlorine, pH balance, and alkalinity.
- Skim Debris: With more people using the pool, there will be an increase in debris such as leaves and insects. Make sure to skim the surface of your pool daily to keep it clean.
- Check Equipment: The hotter temperatures can cause strain on your pool equipment. Be sure to regularly check and maintain your pump, filter, and other equipment to avoid any issues.
- Shock the Pool: It’s recommended to shock your pool once a week during heavy usage. This will help remove bacteria and keep the water clean.
- Keep an Eye on Water Level: With evaporation and splashing from swimmers, it’s important to monitor the water level in your pool. Make sure it doesn’t drop too low as this can cause strain on your equipment.
